Santa Maria Residents Start Mornings With Dawn Yoga at City Parks
Santa Maria residents head to city parks before dawn to start their days with quiet movement and focused breathing.
How we reported this
More Santa Maria locals are arriving at parks before 6 a.m. to practice yoga and meditation on grass still damp from the night.
The trend aligns with longer daylight hours in early July and growing demand for free outdoor wellness options that fit work schedules. City records show the Santa Maria Recreation Department added two extra sunrise sessions this month after last summer’s classes filled within days of opening.
One regular spot is the flat lawn at Waller Park off South Broadway, where a small group unrolls mats near the playground equipment by 5:30 a.m. Another is the open stretch along the Santa Maria River Trail near Cook Street, where participants face east toward the foothills for seated meditation before moving into sun salutations.
Local programs and access
The Santa Maria Recreation Department runs a free sunrise yoga series that began July 1 at Waller Park and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays through August. The Santa Maria Yoga Collective offers a $12 drop-in session at the river trail site on Wednesdays, with mats available for rent at $3. Both programs require no advance registration and welcome beginners.
A 2025 city wellness survey found 38 percent of Santa Maria adults reported practicing yoga or meditation at least once a week, up from 29 percent in 2023. Parks staff counted an average of 47 participants at the Waller Park sunrise sessions last month.
Planning a visit
Arrive by 5:45 a.m. to claim space on the grass and bring water, a mat and insect repellent. The city asks visitors to stay on marked paths at the river trail and to pack out any trash. Those seeking guidance can check the recreation department website for updated start times as sunrise shifts earlier each week.
