City parks staff released updated difficulty ratings this week for five popular routes across Santa Maria neighborhoods.
How we reported this

Santa Maria parks staff released updated difficulty ratings this week for five popular routes across Santa Maria neighborhoods.
July marks the start of the busiest season for outdoor activity in Santa Maria, where daytime temperatures often climb above 75 degrees and residents seek shaded paths before 10 a.m. The ratings help walkers match routes to their fitness level without needing special equipment or permits.
Preisker Park on East Miller Street features the shortest option at 1.8 miles with a flat loop around the central lawn and adjacent bike path. A second route starts at Pioneer Park on Betteravia Road and runs 4.2 miles along the Santa Maria River levee, rated moderate because of occasional loose gravel sections near the water control gates maintained by the Santa Maria Valley Water District.
Distance and difficulty rankings
The Santa Maria Recreation Department posted the full list on its website on July 8. Staff counted 12,400 trail uses during the first six months of 2026, up from 9,800 in the same period last year. The department charges no entry fee at any of the five rated trails, though parking at the Preisker Park lot costs two dollars for two hours on weekdays.
Walkers who want a longer challenge can follow the 7.1-mile route that begins at the corner of Broadway and Cook Street and heads north through the Orcutt foothills. That path carries a difficult rating because of a steady 180-foot elevation gain over the first two miles. A separate 3.4-mile moderate loop circles the perimeter of Elks Park on Stowell Road and passes the community garden plots operated by the Santa Maria Valley YMCA.
Residents planning to try any of the trails can download the free Santa Maria Parks map from the city website or pick up a paper copy at the Recreation Department office on East Cook Street before heading out. Those with existing health conditions should check with a local physician before increasing mileage.
